  2. his career in the service of the Seljuk
  3. Turks, but in 1299 he set up a kingdom of his
  4. own in Bithynia, NW Asia and assumed the
  5. title of sultan. He conquered a great part of
  6. Anatolia, so founding a Turkish empire. His
  7. successors were known as `sons of Osman',
  8. from which the term Ottoman Empire is
  9. derived.
